Rowboat in a Hurricane by Julie Angus

In 2005/2006 Julie and Colin Angus rowed 10,000 km in their 7 metre rowboat across the Atlantic Ocean from Portugal to Costa Rica through one of the worst storm seasons in recorded history. Julie not only writes about her human-powered journey, which solidified her Explorer of the Year award from National Geographic, she also gives important insight into the state of the world’s oceans. Rowboat in a Hurricane is a really great read for the adventurer in all of us.

The Prescription Errors by Charles Demers

Charles Demers has crafted a moving story about illness and healing and how we care about the ones we love. Don’t read this book too quickly or you’ll miss the subtle razor-sharp humour that makes it so f***ing great. This is the kind of book that first makes you want to hang out with the author then makes you worry that you probably aren’t smart enough to.

The World Without Us by Alan Weisman

What would happen to the earth if humans suddenly ceased to exist? It’s an intriguing premise and Alan Weisman does an excellent job exploring it. Talking to engineers, biologists and other experts, Weisman fascinates us with speculation as to the fate of plant life, animals and buildings. He even finds unique places such as the de-militarized zones of Cypress and Korea with no human habitation to get a real example of what happens when humans disappear.
